(Central Motor Vehicle Rules 1989 Section 51)

The dimension of the letter and figures of registration marks and space between different letters and numerals and letter and edge of the plain surface shall be as follows:-

One of the two plates at the front and rear of a motor vehicle, bearing its registration number.

Any type of violation regarding number plate will attract, under  R. 50 of CMV Rules r/w S.177 of MV Act  Rs. 100 for first offence Rs. 300 for second or subsequent offence.
